Desert Pines offensive lineman Sam Poutasi commits to Oregon

The scholarship offers started to accumulate last spring for Desert Pines High senior offensive lineman Sam Poutasi. They came from hometown UNLV, small schools such as Weber State and Northern Arizona, and big-conference programs such as Washington State and Oregon State of the Pac-12.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Poutasi, though, had another notable school he wanted to play for — Oregon. But there was one problem: The Ducks hadn’t offered the three-star recruiting prospect.

That changed Friday.

Oregon coaches visited him at the northeast Las Vegas Valley school, finally extending the coveted scholarship offer. Poutasi, who projects as an offensive guard in college, committed less than five hours later.

Oregon has recruited the Las Vegas area hard in recent years, especially on the offensive line. Tyrell Crosby of Green Valley High is a two-year starter for the Ducks up front, and Arbor View product Elijah George is a redshirt sophomore who played for the first time this fall.

They asked Poutasi to take a recruiting visit this weekend, but he was already scheduled to take the ACT standardized test.

He’s the brother of Tennessee Titan rookie offensive lineman Jeremiah Poutasi, who played at Desert Pines and started three seasons at Utah before declaring early for the NFL.

The younger Poutasi could follow a similar path. Despite tearing his ACL in the spring and missing most of this past season, recruiters continued to actively recruit him.
