Gorman Defeats Liberty State Champs

Bishop Gorman's Damuzhea Bolden (11) attempts an interception as Liberty QB Kenyon Oblad (7) hopes he can't hold on to it during their Division 1 State Football Championship game at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday, December 5, 2015.

When Bishop Gorman High junior defensive back Bubba Bolden was offered a scholarship two months ago from USC, it seemed only a matter of time until he committed. USC, as he’s told multiple reporters, is his dream school.

Tonight, some 14 months until players in his class of 2017 can sign letters of intent, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Bolden committed to the Pac-12 Conference school.

USC is getting one of the Las Vegas area’s top players, regardless of graduating class.

Bolden was one of Gorman’s best defenders this fall in its undefeated season, registering 55 tackles and three interceptions to help the Gaels win a seventh straight state championship.

He’s considered a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, picking USC over offers from the likes of Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Utah.

Gorman’s junior class arguably has the most talent in Las Vegas history with three players already committed to major programs. With the likes of Bolden, defensive back Alex Perry (Arizona State) and quarterback Tate Martell (Texas A&M) leading the way, Gorman could end up with double-digit players from 2017 signing with major colleges.

USC has been aggressive in recruiting Las Vegas. Liberty graduate Noah Jefferson played as a true freshman this season on the Trojans’ defensive line, and Xavier Grimble (Gorman) and Torin Harris (Palo Verde) each enjoyed lengthy careers in recent seasons.

Bolden’s commitment is nonbinding until signing day in February 2017, meaning he can — and will — be recruited by other schools.
