Police: Man shot after pointing gun at officer

A man who was fatally shot by an officer late Monday came out of a house with a gun while three other people were being taken into custody in a robbery investigation, according to Metro Police.

Officer Larry Hadfield said today the man pointed a handgun at an officer, who opened fire. The man was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

The incident began about 8:20 p.m. when officers responded to a call of an armed robbery of a person at a business in the 300 block of North Nellis Boulevard, police said.

Officers were given a license plate number and vehicle description and tracked the vehicle to

the 3800 block of King Palm Avenue, near Alexander and Pecos Roads, police said.

Several people were standing around the vehicle, and as officers were taking them into custody, a man came out of a house holding a handgun, police said.

Police ordered the man to drop the gun, but he refused, Sgt. Jeff Clark said. An officer fired and hit the man, who retreated into the house with the gun, according to police.

Officers went inside and administered medical attention, police said.

The shooting happened not far from a neighborhood near Las Vegas Boulevard and Craig Road where an armed woman was shot and killed by SWAT officers after an hours-long standoff.

The incidents aren’t connected, Hadfield said.
