Metro Police ID officer who shot armed man

Metro Police have identified an officer who fatally shot a man who approached officers with a gun Monday as they were taking three people into custody during a robbery investigation, authorities said.

The officer was identified as 36-year-old Solon McGill, who has been with Metro since July 2013, police said. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of a review of the shooting, police said.

About 8 p.m. Monday, McGill fired multiple shots at Roberto Ortiz Sanchez, 45, outside his home in the 3800 block of King Palm Avenue, near Alexander and Pecos Roads. Sanchez was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

The incident stemmed from an investigation into the robbery of a person earlier that night outside a business in the 300 block of North Nellis Boulevard, police said.

Officers were given a license plate number and vehicle description and tracked the vehicle to Sanchez’s home, police said.

Several people were standing around the vehicle, and as officers were taking them into custody, Sanchez came out of the house holding a handgun, police said. He ignored orders to drop the gun and McGill fire, striking Sanchez, police said.

Las Vegas Sun reporter Jesse Granger and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
