Reno man guilty of shooting in robbery attempt at Home Depot

RENO — A 20-year-old man Reno has been convicted of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon after he fired multiple gunshots while trying to make off with $300 worth of stolen tools from a Home Depot in August.

Jared Johnson faces up to 48 years in prison after a Washoe District Court jury found him guilty on Thursday.

Prosecutors say Johnson tried to steal tools from the north Reno store because he was short of rent money.

Police say he struggled with two security officers who confronted him, then pulled a .22 caliber revolver form his backpack and fired three times.

Witnesses testified Johnson he pointed the gun at one guard's face and threatened to shoot another in the leg. A customer helped the guards disarm him without anyone getting hurt.

Sentencing is scheduled Feb. 5.
