Smoke from fireworks drifts over the Las Vegas Strip just after midnight Jan. 1, 2011. An estimated 320,000 people came to Las Vegas to celebrate the New Year, tourism officials said. This photo was taken from Mix atop The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

When fireworks go up during the New Year’s Eve celebration early Friday morning, dust particles and smoke will come down.

Clark County air officials say small dust particles and pollutants contained in smoke can aggravate respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis and asthma.

The county’s Department of Air Quality issued an advisory today that will be in effect from Thursday night through New Year’s Day.
