Bill would loosen restrictions on political advertising

CARSON CITY — A Nevada lawmaker is proposing a bill that would loosen restrictions on disclosing political advertising contributions.

Republican state Sen. James Settelmeyer is sponsoring Senate Bill 104, which would exempt political candidates from reporting contributions of any type of clothing and items worth less than $5. The bill is scheduled to be heard during Monday's Senate Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections.

Current Nevada law requires candidates to disclose the names of the person or group that paid for the political advertisement and if the candidate supports the message. Settelmeyer's bill would exempt the reporting for any item of clothing and items costing less than $5.

The Minden Republican he introduced the bill because current law is too vague to be effectively enforced.
