Department of Transportation going slow on bill to raise speed limit

CARSON CITY — The state Department of Transportation is going slow in deciding whether to endorse a bill to raise the speed limit to 85 mph on some stretches of rural Nevada interstate.

“We will be very cautious in recommending this,” Transportation Director Rudy Malfabon said.

State Sen. Don Gustafson, R-Sparks, has introduced a bill to allow raising the maximum speed limit from 75 to 85 mph. He sponsored the same bill in 2013 and it died.

Malfabon said the department was neutral in 2013.

He told the Transportation Board there are a “couple of areas” where the speed limit could be raised, but he wants to consider the safety impact.

“I want to check with other states,” he said. There may be some areas where the limit could be raised to 80 mph on Interstate 15 and Interstate 80, he said.
