SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man and a Nevada woman are facing up to five years in federal prison after being convicted of helping people create illegal tax shelters.
Gerrit Timmerman of Midvale and Carol Jean Sing of Henderson were convicted in Salt Lake City Friday of telling clients they could avoid paying taxes by creating an type of incorporation typically by religious leaders.
Prosecutors say the pair marketed the concept online and helped their clients evade tax payments between 2004 and 2007 in a type of a scheme the IRS called one of the dirty dozen tax scams.
Defense attorneys Clayton Simms and Randy Ludlow say they are disappointed in the verdict because the two gave legal tax advice and clients abused it.
Timmerman and Sing are set to be sentenced May 20.
