A woman was arrested on a DUI charge Monday after the SUV she was driving hit a 10-year-old boy in the east valley, police said.

Mara Swenson, 39, was arrested on a charge of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, according to the Clark County Detention Center website.

Swenson was driving west on Owens Avenue toward Linnbaker Lane, near Lamb Boulevard, Monday afternoon when two boys crossed the street in the path of oncoming traffic, Metro said in a news release.

Swenson attempted to avoid the pedestrians, but one of the boys was struck and thrown down onto the road by the 1998 Lincoln Navigator, police said.

The boy who was hit was transported to University Medical Center's Trauma Center with serious injures, police said.

The other juvenile left the scene.

Swenson stayed on scene and was not injured, but she was taken into custody, police said.
