Suspect in custody after standoff that forced school lockdowns

Two elementary schools went on lockdown today and one person was taken into custody after a robbery investigation led to a standoff at an apartment complex near Washington and Eastern avenues, officials said.

Metro Police received a report about 10:15 a.m. of a robbery at a business in the 500 block of Eastern Avenue, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

The suspect, who reportedly carried a handgun, fled before officers arrived on scene, she said.

Arriving police were unable to locate the suspect.

Officers continued to investigate and received information that the suspect was located somewhere within an apartment complex in the 800 block of North Eastern Avenue, Meltzer said.

Officers arranged a perimeter around the complex and, after a standoff, took someone into custody about 3:10 p.m., Meltzer said.

Robert Lunt Elementary School and Arturo Cambeiro Elementary School were on lockdown during the standoff, but the lockdowns were lifted about 3:40 p.m., Clark County School District Police Capt. Ken Young said.
