Fire did an estimated $50,000 damage today at a vacant house where homeless people apparently had been staying, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Nobody was injured.

The fire was reported about 4:15 a.m. today in the 1800 block of Sweeney Avenue after a passerby saw flames on the roof and called 911, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Firefighters found heavy fire in the attic of the single-story house in the area west of Eastern Avenue and Oakey Boulevard, officials said.

The fire, which took about 10 minutes to bring under control, was confined to the attic and did not spread to the interior of the house, Szymanski said.

The house was boarded up and had no utilities, Szymanski said. Investigators found evidence that homeless people had been staying at the house, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
