Boy, 3, dies after California condo fire that injured 9

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. — Southern California authorities say a 3-year-old boy has died after being severely injured in a fire that tore through a condominium without working smoke alarms.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said early Wednesday that the child died at a hospital. His mother and 2-year-old brother remain in grave condition.

Nine people, including six children, were injured by the blaze that filled the four-bedroom unit in San Juan Capistrano with heavy smoke Tuesday. One woman suffered burns and severe leg injuries after she jumped from a window.

Concialdi said Tuesday that there were 17 people living in the rented condo.

Investigators are seeking the cause of the fire that displaced about 80 people. The blaze damaged two units, and six others received smoke and water damage.
