Henderson fire does $35,000 in damage, leaves 2 homeless

A grease fire did an estimated $35,000 in damage to an apartment building Friday night, according to the Henderson Fire Department. No one was hurt.

Also according to the department:

About 6 p.m., firefighters responded at a single-story, multifamily residence on Van Wagenen Street, between Lake Mead Parkway and Pacific Avenue.

They arrived to find smoke coming from one of the apartments and worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighboring apartments.

A resident had been cooking when a grease fire started in the kitchen. The resident tried to extinguish the fire before calling 9-1-1. The building was evacuated.

The fire displaced the resident and a neighbor, both of whom were assisted by the American Red Cross.

A Henderson building inspector, a fire investigator, Henderson Police and NV Energy helped secure the residence.
