Ride-hailing companies balk at $500,000 application fee

CARSON CITY — Representatives of ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft complained today that they could have to pay an up-front fee of $500,000 to operate in Nevada.

The three-member Nevada Transportation Authority held its first public hearing today on proposed regulations for the industry.

The regulations say a company must pay $500,000 to submit an application to operate in Nevada, although the fee may be reduced depending on the number of cars.

Officials with the ride-hailing companies, which connect riders and drivers via a smartphone app or computer, said Nevada’s proposed fee exceeds that of other states.

But James Allen Day, an executive with the authority, said the fee is needed to police the new industry.

The authority will conduct another hearing July 23.

Any initial approval of regulations by the authority would then go to the staff of the state Legislature to ensure they conform with the law.
