CARSON CITY — The newly elected leader of Nevada Assembly Democrats says her one mission is to help Democrats regain the majority after heavy losses in 2014.

Las Vegas Assemblywoman Irene Bustamante Adams was selected Tuesday as chairwoman of the caucus. She said her job leading up to the 2017 legislative session will be fundraising and recruiting potential candidates, with a focus on Southern Nevada districts that lean Democratic.

She replaces Assembly Minority Leader Marilyn Kirkpatrick, who's barred from seeking re-election due to term limits.

Bustamante Adams was elected in 2010 and served as chairwoman of the Hispanic Legislative Caucus during the 2015 legislative session.

Reno Assemblywoman Teresa Benitez-Thompson was elected vice-chairwoman.

Other members elected to leadership roles include assemblywomen Maggie Carlton, Olivia Diaz and Dina Neal, as well as Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle.
