E. coli case reported at correctional center near Reno

A case of E. coli has been reported at Lovelock Correctional Center in Northern Nevada and two additional cases are suspected, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

The department did not immediately confirm if the cases were reported among inmates or staff members.

The state Division of Public and Behavioral Health has been made aware of the cases at the facility in Lovelock, 90 miles east of Reno, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will test lab samples connected to the matter, according to a news release from the corrections department.

The department is "working closely and communicating daily" with the Division of Public and Behavioral Health.

"There is no evidence of any community risk," according to the release, and an investigation is underway.

No other Nevada inmates have been reported to have been infected by dangerous E. coli strains.

Although some strains of E. coli live normally in the human intestines and are considered harmless, others can cause symptoms including fatigue, bloody diarrhea and kidney failure.
