Inspections find Nevada bridges safe after earthquake

The Nevada Department of Transportation has cleared 55 bridges inspected for possible cracks and other damage after an earthquake May 22 centered in Caliente, about 125 miles north of Las Vegas.

Officials said all major bridges in Clark and Lincoln counties were inspected after the magnitude-5.3 temblor. Inspectors were looking for quake-related problems like cracks, misaligned bridge members, displacement and settlement.

“Happily, every bridge inspected was found the be structural sound and safe for public travel,” NDOT spokesman Tony Illia said.

Nevada has the best rated bridges in the country, according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. Less than 2 percent of Nevada bridges are rated structurally deficient, a third of the national average, NDOT said.
