Storms spur flash flood warning at Mount Charleston

Updated Friday, June 12, 2015 | 8:59 p.m.

A flash flood warning is in effect for an area damaged during the Carpenter 1 fire in the Mount Charleston area two years ago, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Service issued a warning just before 7 p.m. for the east half of the Carpenter 1 burn scar, saying the area is highly susceptible to flooding, meteorologist Reid Wolcott said.

Meteorologists are concerned about flash flooding in Harris Springs Canyon because of a stationary storm over the burn scar, and thunderstorms are expected in the area as well, according to the Weather Service.

The water could reach Kyle Canyon Road, Wolcott said.

About 0.20 inches of rain have fallen near one gauge in Harris Springs, and there have been no reports of flooding so far, meteorologist Chris Outler said.

The warning will last through 9:45 p.m., Wolcott said.

It's unlikely even sprinkles will fall in the valley tonight, though there is a small possibility, Outler said.

The high temperature recorded today at the official measurement station at McCarran International Airport was 100 degrees, Wolcott said.

Temperatures are expected to surpass 100 degrees this weekend, and they could approach 110 degrees by the middle of next week, Outler said.
