Southwest Gas plans work on aging natural gas lines

Southwest Gas Co. is planning to replace more than 100 miles of underground natural gas lines that would boost average Clark County customer rates by 20 cents a month to cover initial costs.

The project involves replacing aging pipelines that date back to the mid-1950s.

It has filed its application with the state Public Utilities Commission for approval. It says the work would be completed by 2020.

The project includes replacing 100 miles of plastic pipelines with steel at an estimated cost of $36.6 million, of which the company seeks $16.6 million to cover accelerated costs.

The utility wants new steel pipelines for 3.1 miles on Sunset Road between Escondido Street and Green Valley Parkway, replacement of one mile of steel pipeline on Tropicana Avenue between Sandhill Road and Mountain Vista Street, and 2.7 miles of steel pipeline on Russell Road between Sandhill Road and Stephanie Street.

The PUC has set July 21 for a pre-hearing conference to simplify issues and to set a schedule for further actions.

Southwest Gas has an estimated 640,000 customers in Clark County.
