Nevada eliminating organic food certification program

SPARKS — Those in the organic food and products business in northern Nevada say they may create a private certification process after the state voted to eliminate its own program.

The Nevada Appeal reports that officials decided to end the Nevada Department of Agriculture's Organic Certification program, effective June 2016.

On Tuesday, a group of organic businesses, including growers, producers and sellers, met to consider creating a private certification program.

There are none based in Nevada and advocates say out-of-state ones charge travel expenses that may be prohibitive for a small operation.

The state said its program was running on a deficit.

Only 45 of the 80 certified organic businesses in Nevada get their approvals through the state. The organic certification has been an option since 1997.
