Glitch causes 911 emergency line to ring busy

Callers who dialed 911 early this morning may have received a busy signal as the Metro Police Dispatch Center experienced issues with its system.

The system experienced technical difficulties, and police advised the public about 4:30 a.m. that they might hear the busy signal when calling 911, according to a Metro Police news release.

The issue was resolved by about 5 a.m., police said.

It was not clear how long the system was down or how many callers attempted to reach 911 during that time, Officer Michael Rodriguez said.

The 311 nonemergency system remained up and running, and police suggested callers dial that number instead during the outage, according to Metro.

Rodriguez called the 911 malfunction a “vey rare occurrence” and said if callers get a busy signal when dialing 911 in the future, they should call 311. The call taker can then direct emergency services, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the problem, Rodriguez said.
