Bill would allow audits on charities behind Nevada plates

A bill up for debate in the Nevada Legislature would allow the state to verify that the charities behind specialty license plates are spending the money the way they're supposed to.

Lawmakers reviewed AB189 in the Assembly Transportation Committee on Tuesday.

The bill would allow the state auditor to look into the finances of organizations that receive funds from the sale of special Nevada license plates if there's a complaint about misuse of those funds. Existing law only requires that the organization submit a bank statement and balance sheet each year.

Republican Assemblyman Jim Wheeler says that's not enough information. He noted that the plates bear Nevada's name, and said donors should have confidence that organizations are spending the proceeds on the causes the plates are purported to benefit.
