Juvenile correction center closing near Las Vegas

Nevada's only maximum security juvenile correction center is closing after multiple inspections found dozens of youths were not being adequately protected by the private contractor running the facility near Las Vegas.

The Nevada Department of Child and Family Services says the 43 juveniles at Red Rock Academy — managed by Rite of Passage at the site near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway — will be sent elsewhere.

Department chief of social services Chrystal Main said in an email to the Associated Press they've "reached an amicable agreement to end" the contract.

The Reno Gazette-Journal first reported on its website Tuesday the academy will close after repeatedly running afoul of safety and civil rights requirements.

Rite of Passage also runs a juvenile center near Yerington where four riots have occurred since December. The state pulled all youths in its custody from that facility last week.
