Elaine Wynn foundation donates $2 million for Parkinson’s studies

The Elaine P. Wynn & Family Foundation recently donated $2 million to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health to study Parkinson’s disease.

The foundation gifted the money in honor of Wynn’s late mother, Lee Pascal, who had Parkinson’s disease.

The Lou Ruvo Center will put the money toward Parkinson’s disease studies that use advanced brain imaging, which officials called a “remarkable tool for understanding and exploring brain structure and function.”

A Parkinson’s disease-specific team will be formed to conduct brain imaging and develop new ways to diagnose, predict symptom development and track response to treatment.

Lou Ruvo Center officials said the studies supported also will provide information about:

• Who is at risk for cognitive decline

• The earliest indicators of cognitive impairment

• The brain regions maximally affected in people with cognitive decline

• The rate of cognitive change

• Whether cognitive impairment could be arrested or modified

“We are incredibly grateful for Elaine’s great donation allowing us to expand our PD research,” Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, director of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, said in a statement. “With this gift, we’re able to continue to lead the scientific community in the exploration of brain function and treatment of brain disease.”

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain, leading to symptoms such as tremors and balance and coordination problems.
