A 31-year-old former Henderson police officer was sentenced to up to four years' probation after pleading guilty to reduced charges in a case alleging he drove a pickup truck drunk and the wrong way last October on a Las Vegas freeway.

Joseph Daniel Lawrance said outside court Wednesday that after probation, he wants to help other military veterans deal with substance abuse.

Clark County District Court Judge Carolyn Ellsworth credited Lawrance with his U.S. Marine Corps service and said he can reduce his felony failure to stop for an officer conviction to a misdemeanor if he stays out of trouble and completes alcohol treatment.

Lawrance served in Iraq before becoming a Henderson police officer in September 2012.

He was dismissed from the police department after his guilty plea in November.
