CARSON CITY — A Nevada lawmaker is proposing a bill that would remove the state's statute of limitations on sexual assault cases.
Democratic Assemblywoman Irene Bustamante Adams is sponsoring AB212, which is scheduled for a hearing Friday in the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
Bustamante Adams said the bill is necessary because a large percentage of women don't immediately report sexual assault, and that removing restrictions on the reporting process can help catch perpetrators.
Current law limits reporting on sexual assault cases to a four-year window before cases can no longer be filed. The Democratic lawmaker's bill would remove that restriction and bring sexual assault in line with murder and terrorism as crimes without a statute of limitations.
Bustamante Adams said similar legislation was brought forward in 1997 but was never approved.
