Metro Police ID officer involved in shooting

A Metro Police officer who shot a man while responding to a report of a suspicious person Wednesday has been identified as Thomas Moore, a 25-year veteran of the force, police said.

Moore, 50, who is assigned to Metro’s K-9 section, interrupted a burglary at a home on Blue Jay Way, near Jones and Oakey boulevards, police said.

Moore noticed the door to the house was open and a man inside, police said. After a confrontation, he shot the man once with a handgun, police said.

The subject, 19-year-old Richard Powell, was taken to University Medical Center and was in stable condition, police said.

An investigation later revealed a handgun on the floor of the home, police said.

Moore, who has been with Metro since April 1990, was placed on routine paid administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
