Shootings send two to hospitals Saturday night

The Fight of the Century brought some commotion to Las Vegas.

Two shootings and an influx of disturbance calls were made during the hours following the fight, according to Metro Police.

A total of 5,347 calls were received by the police department, which is 1,800 above normal for a Saturday night in Las Vegas, Lt. John Liberty said.

Directly after the fight, the only problem was heavy traffic, he said. Las Vegas Boulevard and eastbound Tropicana from Interstate 15 were both backed up, and pedestrian traffic on the Strip was also at an all-time high.

Around 12:30 a.m., a shooting took place in front of the Tropicana, in the 300 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard. One victim was transported to University Medical Center with an apparent gunshot wound, Liberty said.

The suspect in the shooting has not been located.

Less than two hours after that incident, another shooting was reported at the St. Lucia apartments, 2150 N. Tenaya Way, near Lake Mead Boulevard, in which police say a man was shot by a security guard.

The guard was checking a vacant apartment at the complex that had possible "squatters" in it. One man hiding in the apartment drew a gun on the officer, who fired two rounds and struck the man in the abdomen. The man's gun was later identified as an airsoft gun, according to Liberty.

The man then fled the scene on foot and showed up at Montevista Hospital. He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and is in critical condition.

The majority of officers were working on the Strip last night, and the relatively calm night after the fight is due to the increased presence of police, Liberty said.
