Las Vegas-based data firm gets FAA approval to fly drones for news gathering

A Las Vegas-based data services company has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate drones for electronic news gathering.

ArrowData is based in Las Vegas with multiple locations in Nevada. It is the first company in the country to receive approval from the FAA to use drones for the purpose of electronics news data, or "aero journalism." Along with its recent approval, ArrowData is also the first Nevada company to receive an exemption by the FAA to fly unmanned aircraft for commercial purposes.

The company was founded in 2014 and specializes in HD video, data collection, transmission, analytics and distribution services.

“This approval from the FAA provides tremendous opportunity for our company to pursue aero journalism while working with local FAA officials to ensure safe flight operations. Helping news stations of all sizes with the ability to have aerial video is a game changer. This is a tool that stations in all markets will use to better inform the public and we’re proud to be leading the way in this new industry,” said James Fleitz, vice president of ArrowData.

Through remotely controlled aircraft, ArrowData plans to help news organizations of all sizes gather aerial information quickly and cost efficiently.
