Ambassador from Pakistan speaking at Las Vegas fundraising gala

The Developments in Literacy Red and Black Night Fundraising Gala will bring hundreds of Las Vegas' most influential people together to support the program's work this weekend, including Dr. Maleeha Lodhi, ambassador to the U.S. from Pakistan.

Dr. Lodhi will be the keynote speaker at Saturday's gala inside the Treasure Island's ballroom. Developments in Literacy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating underprivileged children in remote areas of Pakistan.

Ambassador, diplomat and scholar, Dr. Lodhi has influenced many throughout her career. In 1994 she was named one of 100 people expected to shape the 21st century by Time Magazine; She is also the first woman to ever represent Pakistan to the United Nations.

“This organization is committed to empowering children, especially girls, with the critical thinking skills they need to redefine their future as well as the future of their communities," said Aneeqa Akhtar, president of the Las Vegas chapter of Developments in Literacy. "Having visited DIL schools, I can personally attest to the good work that DIL is doing in these remote areas of Pakistan.”

DIL operates 126 school campus for underprivileged boys and girls in Pakistan. In 2015, DIL is planning to add five new campuses, increase enrollment rates from 21,600 students, to 25,000 and train 2,700 teachers in multiple subjects.

Attire for the event, which is open to the public, is red and black formal. Tickets are $200 per person, and sponsorship tables begin at $2,500.
