A fire displaced about 45 people this afternoon at a central valley apartment complex, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said.

At 10:22 a.m., firefighters were called to Woodlake Villas Apartments at 4747 Pennwood Ave. near Decatur Boulevard and Desert Inn Road.

The fire started in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment, fire spokesman Tim Szymanski said. A mother was cooking and left a pan to check on her children.

When she returned to the kitchen, the pan was on fire. She could not extinguish it, so she grabbed her children and left, Szymanski said.

The blaze traveled to the attic and was upgraded to a two-alarm fire; 50 firefighters were sent to the complex.

The blaze was under control in 15 minutes, and no one was injured.

The apartment underneath sustained water damage, and 14 other nearby units lost power.

The fire damage is estimated at $150,000.
