Updated Sunday, May 10, 2015 | 3:05 p.m.

A woman is dead after an early-morning shooting at an apartment in the northeast valley, according to Metro Police.

Officers responded at about 3:45 a.m. to a complex at 4868 Cleopatra Ave., near Nellis Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue.

Police found a victim they described as a black woman in her 30s in an apartment with multiple gunshot wounds.

She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

An investigation by Metro's Homicide Section revealed that the woman and another family member were watching television when they heard a knock at the front door. The woman opened the door, leaving a security door between her and the suspect. The suspect immediately fired rounds through the security door and fled the complex in a waiting vehicle.

The suspect remains unidentified and the motive unknown. The suspect was described as a black man with short hair and was last seen wearing a white shirt and tan shorts. The suspect driving the vehicle could not be described, but was waiting in a light-colored four-door sedan with tinted windows, police said.

The woman's identity and cause of death have not yet been released.
