A 41-year-old scooter rider was critically injured this morning after crashing in the northeast valley, according to Metro Police.

Las Vegas resident Zonkiss Jones was heading north on Nellis Boulevard near Harris Avenue on a TaoTao motorized scooter when the vehicle, which was towing a homemade trailer, ran off the road, police said.

The scooter ran onto a raised sidewalk about 10:50 a.m. before overturning and sliding across the intersection, ejecting on Jones, police said.

His head hit a traffic signal box, but he was wearing a helmet, police said. He was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The northbound lanes of Nellis were closed to Harris Avenue, police said.

The crash is under investigation.
