Nevada Senate passes police camera bill

Legislation now goes to governor for his signature

By unanimous vote, the Senate passed a bill Sunday permitting law enforcement agencies to require their uniformed officers to wear a camera in encounters with the public.

Assembly Bill 162, which goes to the governor for his signature, requires police departments to set up guidelines for the officers to activate a video device when answering a call or having contact with an individual.

The measure restricts the recording of private residences and makes it illegal for an officer to erase an incident from the tape. The recording will be a public record.

Some 200 Metro Police officers already are equipped with the devices. The department plans to buy another 480 this year.
