A man has been arrested on a felony charge of first-degree arson in connection with a fire that killed a dog this morning at a northeast valley apartment complex, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

The fire was reported about 5:20 a.m. in the 6900 block of Hopkins Drive, in the area of Carey Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, officials said. Smoke and flames were coming from an apartment in the two-story building, officials said.

The occupants were already out when firefighters arrived, and no people were injured, officials said. The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada said through social media that four adults and seven children were affected by the fire.

After putting out the blaze, firefighters found the dead animal, along with two other dogs that were still alive, officials said.

Arson investigators arrested 18-year-old Zayquan Jones in connection with the incident, and his bail has been set at $20,000, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

The cause of the fire and an estimate of the damage were not immediately available.

Firefighters from Las Vegas and North Las Vegas also responded.
