Lawyer: CCSD school can’t keep student from forming pro-life club

Updated Thursday, May 21, 2015 | 5:07 p.m.

Lawyers are demanding the Clark County School District reverse a local high school's decision to stop a student from forming a pro-life club.

The Thomas More Society, a non-profit law firm with a history of defending the rights of pro-life activists, said the West Career and Technical Academy had no right to stop sophomore Angelique Clark from forming a 'Students for Life' club earlier this year.

Clark applied to start the club in December 2014, but was allegedly told by administrators after months of inaction that the club would be "too controversial" and make pro-choice students feel left out. According to lawyers, the school had already approved Bible study clubs as well as a club for gay and lesbian students.

The Thomas More Society said the decision violates Clark's free speech rights. Students for Life of America, a national anti-abortion group, said Clark was discriminated against.

In a demand letter, lawyers from the society gave the district two weeks to respond. They didn't say whether they would pursue legal action.

A CCSD spokeswoman said the district is reviewing the circumstances of the request to form the club but has not yet made a final decision.

It's the second free expression case in two days to be levied at the district. Yesterday, lawyers from the Liberty Institute threatened legal action over a North Las Vegas 6th grader who was banned from using Bible verses in a presentation about herself.
