Reno water authority will need drought reserves by mid-June

RENO — Water flow in the Truckee River is expected to diminish by mid-June, forcing the Reno area's water authority to resort to backup supplies to provide water to homes and businesses.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that recent rains have helped keep the river flowing through May, but the Truckee Meadows Water Authority General Manager Mark Foree says they soon will be using drought reserves for the second summer in a row.

Last summer was the first time in 20 years that Reno-Sparks officials had to use drought reserves. If the water authority is forced to use the backup water in mid-June, it will be roughly six weeks earlier than the step became necessary in 2014.

Most of what was used last summer has been replenished by runoff from winter snowpack.
