Police: Man killed by hatchet-wielding wife, brother-in-law

A man died early Monday morning after his wife and brother-in-law attacked him with a hatchet, Metro Police said.

Police found the victim in the area of Buffalo Drive and Eldora Avenue just before 2:30 a.m. after receiving a report about a possible carjacking and an injured person. The vicim had multiple traumatic injuries believed to be from a hatchet.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim and his wife, Maria Hernandez, 33, were visiting from out of town and met up with Hernandez's brother, 22-year-old Hector Gutierrez.

Hernandez asked Gutierrez for assistance in killing her husband, police said. Gutierrez and Hernandez attacked the victim at some point during the evening and then Gutierrez fled in the victim's car. Hernandez was discovered at the scene.

During the attack, Gutierrez received a non-life threatening stab wound and was transported to University Medical Center, police said.

Hernandez and Gutierrez were both arrested for murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder.
