CARSON CITY — A Nevada bill that would allow students to use the state funds designated for their public education at a private school is drawing strong reactions on both sides.
Members of the Assembly Education Committee held a meeting Thursday to review SB302, which already passed the Senate on party lines.
The bill is sponsored by Republican Sen. Scott Hammond and would allow students a grant equal to 90 percent of their per-pupil state funding allotment. Students could use the money for tuition, textbooks and tutoring.
Republicans said the bill would give parents with children in failing schools the financial ability to move to a better school.
Democrats asked whether the bill would further strain public school funding and questioned whether there would be enough accountability on how the money is used.
