Company recommended for $559.3 million Las Vegas freeway project

CARSON CITY — Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. has been recommended for a $559.3 million contract to design and build Project Neon, a 3.7-mile freeway expansion of Interstate 15 in Clark County.

The state Transportation Department chose Kiewit over two competitors for the most expensive road job in Nevada history.

The 206-page contract will be presented to the state Board of Transportation on Monday for final approval. The board is headed by Gov. Brian Sandoval, who has pushed heavily for the project.

Kiewit is described as an employee-owned company headquartered in Omaha, Neb., and one of the largest contractors in the world.

The contract calls for Kiewit to complete the job in 1,338 days. The department has said construction will start in the first quarter of 2016.

Department Director Rudy Malfabon said the agency “determined the design-build proposal was the best value proposal submitted based on the evaluation of the factors set forth in the request for proposals.”

The other proposals were submitted were from Las Vegas Paving-Jacobs and Neon Mobility Constructors.
