Man surrenders after police respond to reports of gunfire

Updated Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015 | 4:01 p.m.

A man threatening suicide surrendered to police without incident today after officers responded to reports of gunshots in an east valley neighborhood, Metro Police said.

Police were called about 1:40 p.m. to the 6700 block of Hathaway Drive, near North Hollywood Boulevard and East Owens Avenue, Officer Larry Hadfield said.

Police believed a person related to that incident might have been in the house, Hadfield said. Officers made contact with the man and he stated that he was armed and threatened suicide, Hadfield said.

Neighbors were evacuated, he said.

SWAT officers and crisis negotiators responded, and the incident was resolved by about 3:30 p.m.

The man was in police custody, officials said.
