High school evacuated after mishap in chemistry lab

Southwest Career and Technical Academy was evacuated this morning after a demonstration created fumes in a chemistry lab that irritated the eyes, noses and throats of some students, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

The incident was reported about 8 a.m. at the high school at 7050 West Shelbourne Ave., near South Rainbow Boulevard.

A teacher and 34 students were in the chemistry lab. Medics evaluated six students and the teacher, but no one was transported to the hospital, officials said.

After ventilating the building, a hazardous materials team used monitoring equipment to determine it was safe for students to return, officials said. Students and faculty were allowed back by 10 a.m., officials said.
