Metro Police: 1 person killed in officer-involved shooting

Updated Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 | 10:59 a.m.

Metro Police shot and killed a man early today after he refused to show his hands and reached for a gun, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 2 a.m. after an officer tried to pull over a car on Karen Avenue, east of Maryland Parkway, police said.

The officer had ran a check, and the Department of Motor vehicles records did not match the car, which fled to a nearby apartment complex, police said.

Officers spotted a security guard at the complex escorting a man off the property and tried to talk to him, Capt. Matt McCarthy said.

The man had his hands behind his back and ignored orders to show them, McCarthy said.

An officer used a stun gun on the man, but it was not effective, McCarthy said. When the man reached for a gun, three officers fired at him, he said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.

Katie Avenue between Cambridge Street and Maryland Parkway was closed, police said. The area is just south of Maryland and Twain Avenue.
