Las Vegas Valley residents doing any holiday shopping today may want to pick up a few extra jackets and scarves.

Temperatures today are expected to dip below 40 degrees at McCarran International Airport for the first time since February, and a freeze warning is in effect late tonight through Friday morning, National Weather Service meteorologist Clay Morgan said.

The chilly weather is expected to last at least through Monday, Morgan said.

Strong winds visited the valley the past few days ahead of a cold front from the Gulf of Alaska, but those are "about over and done with," he said.

Temperatures will be a few degrees below normal for the next few days, with a high of 53 degrees expected today and a low of 38 predicted overnight at McCarran, Morgan said.

Clear skies and light winds could cause temperatures to drop to freezing or below in outlying areas overnight, he said.

The normal high for today is 61 degrees with a normal low of 42.

The last time temperatures hit below 40 at McCarran this year was Feb. 23.

Between 10 p.m. today and 8 a.m. Friday, an end-of-growing-season freeze warning will be in effect, Morgan said.

Residents are advised to protect their plants and pets, and while there's a small chance of outside plumbing being affected, it doesn't appear it'll get cold enough to cause serious pipe damage, he said.

Little moisture in the air means it's unlikely there'll be rain in the valley today or over the weekend, Morgan said.

There's a 30 percent chance Sunday of snow on Mount Charleston, which will be the best chance for snowfall in the area for the next few days, he said.
