Oregon victim describes gunman’s rampage

An Oregon college student celebrated as a hero for confronting a gunman at Umpqua Community College is telling his story.

In a lengthy statement posted on Facebook on Friday night, Chris Mintz describes the shooting he witnessed Oct. 1.

Mintz says he was in an adjacent classroom when the shooting began in Snyder Hall. He says he held the door open as his classmates fled.

He says he ran through the library to notify people of the shooter, then ran back toward Snyder Hall.

Mintz says he was standing outside the classroom when the shooter opened the door, stuck his torso halfway out and shot him. As he lay on the ground, he says he told the shooter, "it's my kid's birthday, man."

Mintz says the shooter pointed the gun at his face, then retreated into the classroom.
