Yale worker dies after nearly 50-foot fall

A worker has died after he fell about 50 feet into a smokestack on the Yale University campus in Connecticut.

New Haven Assistant Chief Matthew Marcarelli says the man in his 50s fell off a ladder while working inside the chimney at Yale's Central Power Plant around 10 a.m. Saturday.

The man's name has not been released. Fire officials say he was from Oregon and was working to upgrade the plant.

After the man fell, Marcarelli says he was stuck for an hour while crews worked to open the side of the chimney to rescue him. They had to cut through a stainless steel liner to get him.

He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died.

University police and the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration are investigating.
