Parade, race to mark state’s 151st birthday in Carson City

CARSON CITY — Nevada celebrates its 151st birthday Saturday, and in Carson City there will be a traditional parade with more than 180 entries, including politicians and marching bands. It’s the 75th year for the parade, and sunny skies are predicted.

Other parts of the celebration include an 8K foot race, a 2-mile walk, a concert and a beard contest. Awards will be given for the fullest, reddest, whitest, blackest and scruffiest beards.

Sandoval has entered the 8K race and is believed to be the first governor to participate. He and his family will then be in the parade.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., is sponsoring a free chili feed.

Entry to the Nevada State Museum will be free, and tours will be conducted of the governor’s mansion in the afternoon.

Sandoval and his wife, Kathleen, will host a trick-or-treating tonight at the mansion.
