1 dead after small plane crashes into California driveway

SANTEE, Calif. — Authorities say one person was killed and another was critically injured when a small plane crashed in a Southern California neighborhood and ended up in the driveway of a home.

Santee Fire Chief Richard Mattick says both victims were aboard the single-engine plane that went down around 9:20 a.m. Thursday. Nobody on the ground was hurt.

San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Jim Bolwerk says the pilot was breathing when he was extricated from the wreckage and rushed to a hospital. The other person died at the crash site in the small city of Santee, about 15 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.

A fire in the wreckage was quickly extinguished.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the Piper Cherokee crashed about a mile from Gillespie Field airport.
