Friday night roundup: And Justice For All: Foothill running back Jackson punishes Silverado

Foothill players celebrate another score over Silverado, which had 28-7 lead going into halftime on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015.

This might be the most challenging game on the Bishop Gorman High football team’s schedule in its quest to repeat as mythical national champions.

Gorman’s undefeated season in 2014 nearly didn’t happen thanks to tonight’s opponent — defending Utah state champion Bingham. Last season, Gorman needed overtime to fight off the Salt Lake City area school.

Another close finish is expected tonight. Some even feel that because the game is at Bingham, Gorman will lose.

The Bingham faithful packed its side of Fertitta Field last season and cheered loud from start to finish. It was the loudest any opposing team’s fan base has been at Gorman since moving to Summerlin in 2007.

Imagine how loud they’ll be tonight with a full stadium. While Gorman has proven numerous times in recent years the ability to win against national opponents, rarely has it played in the hostile road environment expected tonight.

Gorman is ranked No. 1 nationally, jumping a few spots after last week defeating Chandler of Arizona to open the season. And if the Gaels survive Bingham, it’s back on the road next week to Washington to face perennial power Bellevue.

Gorman isn’t the lone local team taking on a tough national opponent. Five-time Sunrise champion Liberty hosts defending Hawaii state champion Mililani, which is ranked No. 24 by USA Today.

It’s the second straight week Liberty has challenged a Hawaii school. Last week, they lost to perennial power St. Louis at Aloha Stadium.

A pair of rivalry games highlight the rest of tonight’s schedule. Arbor View hosts Legacy in the Battle of the Bulls game, which is expected to be one of the night’s closely contested games. Also, Silverado travels to Foothill for the Victory Bell game.
